First edition, 2 volumes, 4to; identical engraved illustrations at head of dedication pages depicting a shield held up by an elephant and a gryphon with early owner's manuscript dates (1840, 1830; 1863, 1860) on shields; text in triple column; full 20th-century reverse calf, borders tooled in black, black gilt spine labels, marbled endpapers; Vol. I textblock fore-edge a bit ink-splattered; Vol. II leaf 4F4 mounted and laid down. In all a very good, sound set. The author was a professor of Italian and Portuguese in London, and later became Regis Professor of Spanish at the University of Dublin.
