signed unbound
1906
by MARTIN, Jack
1906. unbound. 10 x 8-inch rare original 1906 studio portrait -- possibly unique -- by C.C. Cook, depicting a 17-year-old Martin dressed in riding attire and cap, just months after winning the Kentucky Derby. Boldly signed: "To my good friend Slim from Jack." With the addition of the great photographer's signature, identification marking, and date in the lower right-hand corner: "C.C. Cook photo - 1906 [JACK MARTIN]", as well as his full stamp on the back. An exceptional piece of historical horse racing memorabilia in very good condition. It should be noted that generic, unsigned race horse images by C.C. Cook with the back stamp sell for as much as $500. Acclaimed horse jockey who shocked the racing world in 1905 when he easily won the Kentucky Derby at the age of 16. The Kentucky Derby News reported: "Agile was full of speed all the way and Martin never let him down at any of the trip. He drew away under restraint in the last furlong, and was only galloping at the end." (Inventory #: 245319)
