Large chip to bottom third of spine on Volume I, else about very good, with small scrape to front board of Volume II, small scrapes to rear board of Volume III and some splitting of leather on lower spine, all volumes rubbed on spine hinges; light scattered foxing, primarily on front matter, otherwise tight, clean, and crisp with tissue guards present.. Frontis, engraved titles [2], xiv, 540 pp.; Frontis, engraved title, facsimile letter, viii, 540; Frontis, engraved title, viii, 552 pp. + facsimile [8]. Illus. with numerous steel engravings from original works by Leutze, Weir, Powell, Chappel and other American artists. 4to. Preliminary bound-in leaves include overall series title and Volume I title pages (in addition to the regular title page) which were originally registered by Martin, Johnson and Company, precursor to Johnson, Fry and Company in 1856, when the book was to be entitled "History of the United States from the Earliest Period to the Present Time."
