New York: Graham Gallery, 1972. First edition. Paperback. g to g+. Oblong octavo. Unpaginated. [28]pp. Original illustrated wrappers. This remarkable catalogue essay for the Cartoon & Comic Strip Art exhibition is a major contribution to knowledge of the cartoon and comic strip art and an excellent introduction to a much neglected art form. Jerry Robinson traces the history of cartoon art from the Palaeolithic cave walls 30,000 years ago to Johnny Hart's famous B.C. strip of today, touching on Ancient Egyptian satire, The Bayeux Tapestry, Dr. Syntax, Tarzan, Buck Rogers, Dick Tracy, Blondie, Charles Addams, Thomas Nast, Benjamin Franklin (first American political cartoonist) and Batman and Zap along the way. This catalogue of 145 works mostly by American cartoonists, spans a seventy-five year period (1896-1971) and is profusely illustrated with numerous b/w reproductions of drawings, cartoons, and comic strips. Wrappers age-toned and slightly creased along edges. Tiny chipping at lower front corner. Wrappers in overall good-, interior in good+ to very good condition.
