Diederich Heßling, an industrial magnet, exploits his workers in his paper manufacturing plant. The young worker Karl Balrich thinks he has proof to be the rightful owner of the plant. Balrich prepares to study jurisprudence to seek his right but ends up being one of the first German workers to march enthusiastically against France in World War I. The novel is considered a tragic comedy and drew criticism, e.g. from Hermann Hesse who wrote to the publisher Kurt Wolff expressing his displeasure with Mann's comedic simplification of the the capitalist-proletarian relation.
