Cloth
1914 or 1915
by Cheuillotte, J.
1914 or 1915. Cloth. Very Good. The drawings are all rendered with an uncommonly precise hand, if by an amateur. Oblong, 17.5 by 25.5 cm. 29 pp. of drawings, ten of which are watercolored, the remained, ink work. Some of the ink work is credited as having come from other sources, and so the artist here copied or adapted from these sources, which include the artist Hansi, or cartoons from the Daily Chronique or The Cartoon. All the watercolors bear no such crediting, and so it is assumed that these and a few of the ink drawings are entirely original. Since it is obvious that the artist, probably this J. Cheuillotte (whose name is on the front cover) had a proficiency with drawing, the purpose of the album might well have been to share some favorite cartoons with others, or to hone his own craftsmanship through emulation. The depictions of the Germans is less about showing them as sinister as much as simply absurd. Light wear and finger soiling here and there.
