Card, bound together with twine
1944
1944. Card, bound together with twine. Good. German homemade book of cartoons relating to a soldier's canteen during the Second World War. Oblong, 15 by 21 cm. 18 leaves. Original text and illustrations confined to rectos, with informal comments by others on four versos. The work is a light satire of German efficiency, precision, obediance, and the like. There is not really much sense of the national convulsions of the period. The illustrations, rendered in colored pencil and crayon, are suffused with charm. In one, an alarm clock is hitting itself over the head. Others could easily fit into the light cartoon strips of American newspapers of the era (Blondie and the like). The verse is fluid, but its narrative thrust is somewhat diffuse. It is the illustrations that matter. Front cover has repaired crack. On front the crack line is still visible, and within the board has been stabilized with a strip of paper that doesn't match perfectly color-wise. Other crease lines, soiling, and wear on covers. A few loose leaves. Minor edge dampstaining and browning to pages within. (Inventory #: 003291)
