He escaped Russia after the Revolution and settled in France where he worked until his death.Though largely known for his books on chess, his current extensive history of the Russian theatre at the beginning of the twentieth century was a masterpiece in its own right and it covered chapters on the pre-1900 Russian theatre, the theatre and the Revolution, the Moscow Art Theatre, etc.
