[Faux Book] Box with Intricate Marquetry Inlay Work

  • NA
NA. Very Good. A beautiful, exceptional example of folk art applied to a faux book box with a drawer. Dimensions: 27 by 20 by 5.5 cm. While it reads "folk art", with a certain naivete and perhaps rough quality that would distinguish it from the work of a Parisian ebeniste, the inlay work is elaborate, intricate, and well-executed. On both the back and front one finds patterns of diamonds, zigzags and/or chevrons, and corner squares. The spine has alternating light and dark stained wood to mimic compartments divided by raised bands. There are at least three different colorations applied to the wood pieces. Virtually all inlay pieces intact, remarkably so, with only very trivial losses. One narrow edge piece is a later replacement. Some scuffs and edgewear.
