Turner received his medical degree from the Univ. of Penn. in 1858. He departed for Europe that year to enhance his medical skills while staying in Paris for several months. The book offered here is an account of his journey to Europe and on to Palestine. He returned to America just before the outbreak of the Civil War and was commissioned a naval surgeon in the Confederate Navy. He spent the last year as a prisoner in Union custody. He practiced medicine in Philadelphia in the post war period until his death in 1877. The printers were a father and son operation that began in 1854. The production cost of the book offered here must have been substantial for the firm who could not have foreseen the war and its impact. It is in an elaborate gilt stamped binding. The lithographic illustrations were drawn by Max Rosenthal of Philadelphia and printed by the firm of I N Rosenthal. Absent from Smith, Am. Travellers Abroad.
