The preface states that this edition has been so greatly enlarged, reorganized and corrected that it is virtually a new book. . Contemporary calf, gilt spine with red morocco label, edges stained red. Twelvemo. . One inch splits along front and back joints near head of spine, binding extremities a bit worn. Old ink signature on title-page, a few small stains. A good, clean copy. Cioranescu describes Varennes (?-1745?) as chaplain to the king and Abbé of Landévennec. In this book, he looks at the behavior of a number of fictional characters (Agenor,"petit maitre, étourdi, sans jugement"; Elvire, "fille d'une grande vertu, & qui fait par cela même tant d'[honneur à son sexe"; Utime, "homme à qui l'ambition à tourne la `tête"; etc.) in order to discuss good and bad conduct.
