Bound by GRUEL: full black crushed morocco with gilt fillets forming interlocking grids on upper and lower covers, spine panelled, five raised bands, silk moire doublures, teg, original wrappers of ochre wove paper bound in, matching morocco-edged slipcase. Right outer joint worn, book fine. Illustrated with 40 etchings by Gilbert, engraved by Cattelain, and 22 culs-de-lampe by Choffard, the "romantique," Grandville-like work opens each chapter with an engraving incorporating each successive letter of the alphabet.
