Mary E. Wilkins Freeman (1852-1930) is best known as "regional" writer of short stories, although the novel THE SHOULDERS OF ATLAS (1908) falls into neither category. She was extremely successful during her lifetime, honored with the Howells Medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and election to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Her fiction has undergone a recent upward reevaluation by literary scholars, NAW citing her stories as "uncommonly well designed." "Through her personal vision, the fruit of an endless and honest probing of her own spirit and her milieu, Mary Wilkins achieved a lasting illumination of human character." BAL 6397. NAW I, pp. 667-668. (Inventory #: 7240)
