By Young, Rev. Edward
London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts, 1857. first edition. Covers and page tops soiled, and spine/corners bumped. Otherwise good and free of marks. Tight but for one signature that has come loose (pp. 97-110).. Original publisher's pink cloth stamped in black ornate design. xv, 317 pp. with occasional bw illus., followd by [2] pp. ad for book, and 24 pp. publisher's ads. Errata slip bound in. A very readable copy of a very rare, early book on this topic, exceptions being noted above. Includes The Philosophy of Art, with several sections on the Turner Controversy; The Poetry of Art - truth, beauty, imagination; The Religion of Art; The Revolution of Art (heavy on architecture - radicalism, morals, polity, etc.). Esoteric stuff but great reading to understand the basis of the Pre-Raphaelites.
