Producer Dino De Laurentiis saw Robert Redford in the role of Casanova but Fellini refused to cast him. When De Laurentiis bowed out of the project and Fellini signed a new contract with producer Alberto Grimaldi, Sutherland was cast in the role, requiring that (truncated)
