Les Poemes Barbares; Vingt-six eaux-fortes originales dessinees et gravees par Odette Denis
Full Calf
1948 · Paris
by Lisle, Leconte de. Illustrations by Odette Denis
Paris: Le Livre de Plantin, 1948. Limited Edition. Full Calf. Near Fine. This is No. IX of 15 copies produced "hors commerce" intended for the collaborators on the project and of a total limitation of 205 copies. The leaves in this copy are of a heavy card. 4to. 32 by 25 cm. Unpaginated. 42 leaves, with full page plates blank on versos and other leaves, including ones with illustrations, printed on both sides. The animal illustrations are very much of the best "Animalier" tradition, as in Bayre, Bonheur and the like, with a fine attention to detail without fussiness and a freedom of hand that captures compelling a sense of movement. The illustrations complement and augment perfectly the already classic verses about wild animals of de Lisle. Scarce, with the only copy located on OCLC FirstSearch in the Bibliotheque Nationale. One early page with heavy foxing on its bottom half; otherwise, mostly clean, even pristine, with light wear to the full calf binding. (Inventory #: 003849)
