SUBSTANCE OF A SPEECH BY HON. JOHN C. BRECKINRIDGE DELIVERED IN THE HALL OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, AT FRANKFORT, KENTUCKY, DECEMBER 21, 1859
- Washington, D.C.: Henry Polkinhorn, Printer, 1860
Washington, D.C.: Henry Polkinhorn, Printer, 1860. 16pp. Spine tastefully reinforced, Very Good.
Vice-President Breckinridge-- in 1860 the presidential candidate of the Southern Democrats-- says, "The republican party must be overthrown." Its goal is "to introduce the doctrine of negro equality into American politics." Having been elected by the Kentucky Legislature as Senator for the next Congress, he defends the Dred Scott decision in orthodox southern terms: "In regard to every description of property, including slaves, recognized and guarded by the constitution, it is the duty of the courts of the country to protect and guard it whenever the question is brought before them." Failure to accept this principle in all sections of the country will dissolve the Union.
LCP 1500. Sabin 7671n, OCLC recording other printings. Not in Coleman, Work, Eberstadt.
