Gerhard Herzberg was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1971 "for his contributions to the knowledge of electronic structure and geometry of molecules, particularly free radicals". During 1928-1930 Herzberg was a postdoc in the laboratories of Nobel Laureate James Franck, and moved to Darmstadt in November 1930.

Hertha Sponer "became an assitant to James Franck at Göttingen University where she became Professor of Physics (truncated) in 1932." and eventually moved out of Germany to Duke University in 1936 (she later married her mentor Franck). Before doing so however, she was named Senior Lecturer in Gottingen from 1925-1932 and was appointed "extraordinary professor" in 1932, a very unusual honor for a woman at the time. Lise Meitner and Hedwig Kohn were among the few women known at the time in Germany. (dgp-physik.de history)

This offprint title (translated) is "on the dissociation of the nitrogen molecule". Herzberg's thesis was on the spectrum of nitrogen and its afterglow and earned him the Doctor of Engineering degree in 1928. (Inventory #: 23899)
