History of Southeastern Dakota. Its Settlement and Growth…
first edition
1881. · Sioux City, Iowa:
by [Dakota Territory].
8vo, original brown cloth, spine with gilt lettering, 392 [8] pp. Rebacked with original spine laid down, corners showing, some warp marks on cover, normal aging and browning; otherwise very good. Somewhat scarce history of Dakota, covering the territory generally, but also county by county. Includes information on who originally settled there, and what their origins might be. Speculates that Dakota Indians could be descendants of Prince Madoc of North Wales. Of more practical value are the many details of this territory, which includes census data from 1881. In addition to a population of some 230,000 that year, the statistics also reveal the ethnic makeup of different counties. There are several pages of advertisements listing lawyers, merchants and real estate agents. The work also contains about 80 pages of biographical details of Dakota pioneers and businessmen.
