In addition to artists such as Rinpa, Maruyama-Shijo, and artists of the Kano, Tosa, and Hasegawa schools, the selections include paintings by Ike Taiga, Sengai, and Tawaraya Sotatsu. Kobayashi gives an overview of the collection, and other authors give the major histories of nanga painting, Rinpa painting, and ukiyo-e during the Edo period. Traditional painting practices, nanga and zanga collecting in the US, and other topics are covered as well. For the majority of the works, this is their first time in a publication.
