London: Sidgwick and Jackson, 1960. First English Language Edition. 12mo (19cm.); original simulated cloth in blue-green dust jacket printed in black and brown; 256pp. Spine a bit cocked, small, discrete abraision at mid-jacket spine possibly from previously removed lable; very faint rubberstamp to upper panel of "Olaf Norlis Forlag," Duun's Norwegian publisher. Originally published in Norway as Menneske og Maktene in 1938. The prolific Norwegian author's last work, addressing, as in his previous novels, life in a rural community, in this case the impoverished fishing community on the island of Oyvaere. Duun wrote in the Landsmål dialect, a conglomeration of peasant dialects disparate from the official languages of Nynorsk and Bokmål. (Inventory #: 25574)
