c. 1870s. Hardcover. Very Good+. 19th-century Brown family photograph album, with scenes from India, Australia, Scotland, and England. 155 vintage albumen print photographs (a few hand-colored) mounted on 27 album leaves, the majority displayed through window mounts and captioned in pencil, comprising: 136 cartes-de-visite (3-3/4 x 2-1/4 in.), 6 large format prints (approx. 7-1/4 x 9-1/2 in.), 9 cabinet card-sized prints (approx. 4 x 6 in.) and 5 smaller-sized prints (approx. 3-1/2 x 4-1/2 in.). 4to. ca. 1870s. Contemporary mid-19th century green pebbled morocco over beveled boards, covers tooled to a panel design with citron morocco onlay tooled in repeating interlocking rope pattern, a.e.g., metal clasp. Some scuffing to covers, photographs generally near fine, with just a few nicks or scratches. Provenance: Madeline Force Brown (gift inscription from Charles and Edith Hill, 21 October 1869, on first blank).

Vintage photograph album from the last quarter of the 19th-century, with some 155 photographs of the Brown family and relatives, including surnames Hernderson, Ramsay, Callum, Brownell and many others. Evidently a large family with holdings in Scotland — the estates of Attadale and Dunach are pictured here — as well as connections in India and Australia. Nearly all of the photographs are captioned in pencil on the mount — two large-format photographs are group shots, titled "India," and some of the individual carte-de-visite and cabinet prints were photographed by Bourne and Shepherd, Calcutta (including one Walter Brown in costume as "'Masamiello,' Government House, Calcutta, 31st Dec. 1870.") Other photographers credited are Johnstone,O'Shannessy & Co., Melbourne, and Eliot & Fry, London. The Scottish landscape painter Horatio McCulloch is pictured here, and three cabinet card-sized photographs of a cricket match are found at the end of the album. A finely bound album, with interesting and visually rich content.
