Contemporary calf with later rebacking, blind fillets to boards, gilt title to spine, hinges mended. Moderate rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, some gatoring along joints. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. $300. * First and only edition. Vair, a spirit-dealer in Leith, was apparently engaged to Miss Dinah Grive, "a lady in Dumfries." He objected to inappropriate attentions paid her by David Armstrong, a writer. Vair alleged that Armstrong had caused the lady to break off her engagement and was therefore entitled to challenge him to a duel. Armstrong refused the challenge, won the court case and was awarded 20 pounds in damages.
