Congressman Millard Fillmore writes to Secretary of State Daniel Webster, recommending James Thompson for the position of U.S. Consul at Glasgow. Fillmore was serving as a Congressman from New York at the time. He was elected vice president with Zachary Taylor, and assumed the office of the presidency when Taylor died in 1850, just one year into his term. (Inventory #: WRCAM43487)
