by [Langara, Juan de]
[Madri, 1799. Folding map, 40 1/2 x 26 inches. Minor fold lines and edge wear. Overall quite clean. Very good. A note on the bookplate indicates this map was presented to the Maryland Historical Society by its founder, Brantz Mayer, noted attorney and antiquarian. An attractive chart, diagonally across the center of which is the large channel between Cuba and the southwestern reaches of the island group. Two large inserts show certain particularly hazardous islets and shoals in greater detail. The map was commissioned by the King's secretary of state, Don Juan de Langara, most famous for his role in the mapping the Gulf Coast in the same year. Rare. Not in Phillips MAPS, Rumsey, nor on OCLC. (Inventory #: WRCAM31315)
