West was rector of the West Indian School and Institute in Copenhagen, and at a different time director of public education on St. Croix. This book describes his investigations of St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda. "This book of facts about the island's flora and fauna, agriculture, and trade was repeatedly quoted by later authors" - Robert Graff. The NUC locates only seven copies.
