Softcover
1898 · Atlantic City
Atlantic City, 1898. Softcover. Very Good. 32mo album. Measuring 6" x 4.75". Flexible green cloth with "Photograph" in gilt on the front and a Montgomery Ward ticket at the rear. Very good with chip at the foredge, splash marks on the rear and general rubbing. An album containing 28 gelatin silver prints and one cyanotype, measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 4.5" x 2.75". An interesting album of images of Atlantic City, New Jersey at the turn of the century. Images include snowy streets, teams of people shoveling, women bundled in coats, and the Atlantic City Lighthouse, along with garden shots of people in fairer weather posing. There is also a curious photo of one of the city's numerous piers with what appears to be an early Ferris Wheel-like ride that can be seen in silhouette, possibly Issac N. Forrester's Epicycloidal Wheel or William Somers' Observation Roundabout. The numerous shots of deep snow, along with images of what appears to be women standing by an enormous telephone switchboard, indicates these photo were likely taken in 1898 when record snowfall hit the area and telephone technology was being rapidly adopted. An interesting collection of images of Atlantic City during its heyday.
