State of Vermont, 1863. unbound. 1 page, 9.75 x 7.75 inches, State of Vermont, Adjutant General's Office, Woodstock, September 6, 1863. Written to Addison W. Preston, Lieutenant-Colonel, 1st Regiment & 1st Cavalry, declining to give him his own Regiment, in part: "...I have submitted your letter to the Governor, and he directs me to inform you, that he is not at present prepared to authorize the raising of additional Cavalry in this State: but that if he should deem it expedient to do so, he will give your application full consideration..." Preston had a distinguished career during the Civil War and Commanded a Regiment. Washburn's letters, though not rare, is extremely scarce due to his early death from a nervous breakdown at the age of 55. Natural folds; fine condition. American soldier and politician who fought in the early battles of the Civil War and subsequently achieved the rank of Brigadier General. He was elected Governor of Vermont on September 7, 1869 and died five months later on February 7, 1870. (Inventory #: 264496)
