He guessed right when the whole country was guessing wrong. He sold everything, invested in government bonds, and cleared out for the south of France before the market went haywire." (At one point, he discovers that his son, "who went Bolshevik on him at Harvard," is contributing half his generous monthly allowance to the Sacco and Vanzetti defense fund.)
