Octavo (8vo). xviii, [i], [i] blank, 571 pages of text including an index, followed by [i] page of publisher's advertisement. Original decorative green cloth binding is moderately worn and rubbed, with some scratching to the rear board, remaining intact and attractive; protected in custom-fitted archival mylar. Complete with 13 colored maps (many of which are fold-out) and numerous illustrations. A few of the fold-out maps have small tears at the hinge where they are attached to the book. The text contains frequent but very light pencil underlining and notation, presumably by Frederick G. Gurney (1878-1947) of Eggington, near Leighton Buzzard, was an archaeologist, local historian and antiquarian. His extensive research notes are held by the Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society. Gurney's name is written in pencil on the dark endpapers. Third edition..
