by Haines, Elijah M.
Chicago: W.B. Keen, 1858. Octavo. 189p. Elijah Haines (1822-1889) was born in New York but removed to Illinois in 1836 where at age 16 he bought a farm which became the town of Hainesville. He was admitted to the bar in 1851 and was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1858 where became a leader in the Republican Party and became a friend with Abraham Lincoln who he had known a decade earlier as he first pursued a study of law. Since the printing presses in Wisconsin were too small for such a large book, Haines had the local firm of William B. Keen published this work. Most copies were destroyed in both the great Chicago fire and its spread (truncated)
