by MAY, JOE & LEO BIRINSKY (HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY - THE FILM)
Beverly Hills, CA, n.d. First Edition. Joe May was the original producer on the silent film version of Hungarian Rhapsody. In the 1940s, as an escapee from Nazi Germany, he attempted this eventually unproduced sound remake. Present here is the original 40 page typescript for the sound treatment. The original silent film Hungarian Rhapsody (also known as One Against Three), was released in 1928, directed by Hanns Schwarz, starring Lil Dagover, Willy Fritsch, and Dita Parlo. Bradbound. Very good slightly used copy with some minor creasing and repair to the final page. With a printed label from Joe May’s Hollywood agents affixed to the upper left corner of the front cover: “Submitted by Phil Berg - Bert Allenberg, Inc., 9484 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills, Vivian Gaye, Oxford 3131.” Film director and producer, Joe May (1880 - 1954), was born Joseph Otto Mandel, and became one of the pioneers of German cinema. In 1917 May gave Fritz Lang one of his earliest breaks in the film industry as screenwriter on the film Die Hochzeit im Excentricclub (Wedding in the Eccentric Club) and Lang also worked on other May films at this time.
