Philadelphia, 1939. 2 1/2" x 3 1/8'. Black and white photographic illustrations. Minor dustsoiling, minimal wear. Very Good.
Gum, Inc. was founded around 1930. In 1939, it released the 'Play Ball - America' series. The cards were a bit larger than most earlier tobacco cards, and featured a black and white photo illustration of each player. The versos contain the player's full name, team, position, when and where born, throwing arm, batting position, height and weight, and professional history. Beneath the history the card advertises the set and mentions it is a series of 250 cards. The cards were actually issued only up to number 162, with number 126 purposefully not being issued. Baseball historians say this was done deliberately in an effort to keep people purchasing the sets in search of the elusive number 126. (Inventory #: 32747)
