SKETCHES OF THE LIFE OF WILLIAM STUART, THE FIRST AND MOST CELEBRATED COUNTERFEITER OF CONNECTICUT
1854 · Bridgeport
by [Stuart, William
Bridgeport: Printed by the autho, 1854. 223pp. Titlepage vignette. Contemporary brown cloth, gilt-stamped cover. Spine reinforced with contemporary cloth, slightly rubbed. Rather heavily foxed. Pencilled ownership signature and other markings on front free endpaper. Good. An amusing narrative of mischief and petty crimes perpetrated throughout the Northeast, including curious tales of counterfeiting, prison busts, and horse thievery. Stuart served time in Connecticut's Newgate Prison but eventually turned to a life of sobriety. He intended his work to serve as defense of temperance, but its lasting value rests in its deleterious content. Scarce. HOWES S1104. SABIN 93218 (Inventory #: WRCAM31073)
