PERSONAL NARRATIVE OF TRAVELS IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA IN 1826 WITH REMARKS ON THE PRESENT STATE OF THE AMERICAN NAVY..
1827 · London
by De Roos, F. Fitzgerald
London, 1827. xii,235pp. Original paper boards, expertly rebacked, paper label to spine. Old lending library bookplate to front pastedown. Minor loss to lower outside corner of pp.71-2 (not touching text), occasional light foxing and a few spots of soiling. About very good. The third edition, issued in the same year as the first, but lacking the fine plates after drawings by the author. The purpose of the author's travels was to survey the strength of the U.S. Navy in order to ascertain what position it was in to challenge Britain's domination of the seas. Although he found developments in America impressive, his final opinion, after visiting most of the coast from Washington northward, was that claims for American naval strength were exaggerated.
