Contemporary gift inscription, ink stamp on front pastedown, mild foxing. Very good. Lanman started at St. Louis in June of 1846, paddled upriver to the Falls of St. Anthony, and spent August on Lake Superior. This is the first of Lanman's numerous works on travel in the American back country, and his style and spirit owes a serious debt to his friend and the recipient of this volume, Washington Irving.
