1944
1944. Edward Land began devising his Poloroid glasses just before World War II. As the Army Air Force needed to find ways to detect elevation, he helped them develop 3-D technology that first was used in bombing over Germany and then in the Pacific beginning with tests in the Aleutians. The reconnaissance planes began taking extensive aerial photographs of the Mariana Islands with an emphasis on Guam. General Haywood Hansell helped as the 3-D models prepared the way for the invasion of Guam and eventually Japan where the details helped B-29 crews in the Pacific recognize every steam, hill and industrial target in the Nipponest homeland.
