This is a narrative of a captivity among the Osage in Kansas and Hunter's journey across the mountains to the Columbia River. For many years this narrative was attacked as a fiction, but Richard Drinnon, in his "White Savage: The Case of John Dunn Hunter" (1972) makes a strong case for its authenticity.
