Contemporary marbled boards with recent period-style calf rebacking with raised bands, endpapers retained, untrimmed edges. Moderate rubbing to boards, corners bumped, front hinge cracked, rear hinge starting, early armorial book plate to front pastedown. Title page printed in red and black, woodcut head and tail-pieces. Light toning to text, minor worming to margins in a few places. Early owner signature to head of title page, interior otherwise clean. * First edition. According to Holdsworth, Oughton's study of the practice of the ecclesiastical courts "was scientific, accurate, and historically correct. (...) [It] became the accepted authority on the practice of the ecclesiastical courts" (Holdsworth). In 1738 Oughton published a companion volume, Ordo Judiciorum; Seu Formularium in Negotiis et Litibus in Foro Ecclesiastico-Civili, a collection of formularies.
