A Federalist who allied himself with Hamilton, "he frequently crossed swords with Hamilton's opponent, James Cheetham" [Id.] Here he lauds the American "character as a brave, free and independent people." He warns that "FRANCE has advanced propositions, and made demands upon this country, which, if once acceded to, will annihilate the dignity, honor, and independence of the nation...WHAT! The free-born sons of AMERICA become the vassals of France!"
