First [blank] leaf has a small rectangular piece of wood attached by thin wire next to an ink inscription: "To Barclay Fleming at Lincoln's Tomb April 29, 1925. accompanying a piece of wood from Lincoln's Springfield home. Embossed stamp ("H. W. Fay Custodian Lincoln's Tomb Springfield. Illinois") at top of the leaf OCLC has an entry for a 1924 edition of this oft-reprinted pamphlet which is described as having "a piece of wood (in pocket). We assume that those pieces were also from Lincoln's home. Fay must have also dispensed copies, such as this one, with a piece of wood from Lincoln's home attached by wire to selected visitors. In this case, [Joseph] Barclay Fleming, 1881-1970, was an important Scottish-born Chicago lawyer who served for many years as President of the Chicago Public Library Board.
