[Newport, Rhode Island, 1918. Unbound. Very Good. Panorama. Approximately 19½" x 8". Sepia-toned gelatin silver photograph. Small chips and tears mostly confined to the bottom margins, several small stains on the image, overall very good. Photograph shows a large expanse of tents, and long mess tables in the right foreground. Camp Admiral Oman was a military camp set-up on the Vanderbilt Farm outside of Newport. After the first week of the devastating Spanish Flu epidemic, 1000 men returning home from Europe were removed from the receiving barracks at the Newport Naval Base to the temporary Camp where they were confined, and which apparently proved that fresh air, cleanliness, and quarantine effectively halted the rapid spread of the disease. Little-known and unsung, images of the Camp are very scarce. (Inventory #: 409939)
