[Oxford]: Printed [by Leonard Lichfield] in the Waine of the Moone, 1643. Sole separate edition. [4], 121-126, [12] pp. A very good copy in modern half calf over marble boards, plain endpapers, edges stained red, closed tears along inside margin of title-page, lacks terminal blank, light browning and staining. Sole separate edition. [4], 121-126, [12] pp. A reprint of Mercurius Britannicus, no. 16 (7-15 December, 1643, pages 121-126) that Taylor half parodies, half satirizes, piece by piece.
This is one of the many pro-Royalist squibs published in the early years of the English Civil War. Taylor had recently fled London for Oxford where he was well-received by the King and offered employment as a "yeoman of the guard and joint water bailiff, with responsibility for taking up boats to transport ammunition and supplies, and for keeping the waterways clear" (ODNB). Wing T481; ESTC R8378. Provenance: Macclesfield copy (bookplate); Robert S. Pirie (bookplate) (Inventory #: 304112)
