The Academy Award-winning screenplay for the black comedy *MASH* written by Ring Lardner, Jr. and based on Richard Hooker's novel of the same name, which followed a group of doctors stationed with a mobile army hospital during the Korean War. The film was directed by Robert Altman and starred Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland as surgeons negotiating the absurdities of war, which resonated with audiences during its release at the height of the Vietnam conflict. Though it was a difficult production with apparent friction between Altman, Lardner and many of the actors, the final film was an instant classic and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture and awarded the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
