Amsterdam, 1725. Copperplate engraving and etching on verge-type hand-laid paper, with watermark. (circa 28.5 x 48.5 cm. paper size; circa 20.5 x 32 cm.image size). Table of Showbread (Lechem) are part of the altar in the tabernacle. In a biblical or Jewish context "showbread" (or in the King James Version: "shewbread"), refers to the cakes or loaves of bread which were always present on a specially dedicated table in the Temple in Jerusalem as an offering to God. The image was used as a book illustration for Augustin Calmet’s, Het algemeen groot historisch, oordeelkundig, chronologisch, geografisch, en letterlyk naam- en woord-boek, van den gantschen H. Bijbel. Henr. Westerhovius, published in Leiden, Amsterdam, by Samuel Luchtmans, R. & J. Wetstein en Smith 1725-1731. This reknown encyclopaedic dictionary covers all aspects of the history, geography, and culture of the Bible and Biblical times. The Dutch translation originates from Calmet's work in French, Commentaire litteral sur tous les livres de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Testament ..., first published in Paris in 1707.
