New York: Negro Universities Press, 1969. Hardcover. Fine. With a Review of the Problem in West and West-Central Africa by W.R. Stewart (Late of the Niger Company). Facsimile reprint of the 1903 first edition. It is stated that "South African literature is strangely lacking in works comprehensively handling the African native as he actually lives and thinks," and that this book "is only advanced as a pioneer effort in this region of inquiry." The scope of the publication embraces the "present stage of development and mental plane" of the natives, together with a description of their character and customs, some notes on the influence of the missionaries on their conduct and industry, and a careful examination of the effect of the demand for colored labor upon the tribes, with discussion of the treatment of those employed in the mines. Particular attention has been given to the "native problem" of South Africa, which, it is stated, at the commencement of the 20th century, had a population of between five and six million colored people, in "various stages of evolution." Brown cloth binding, issued without a jacket. A fine copy. Mendelssohn, S.: South African Bibliography, Volume I, p.419. (Inventory #: 13183)
