Color frontispiece, with 16 halftones and facsimiles (some color), with two folding maps. First edition, limited to 550 copies. "The journal of Alexander Barrington of St. Mary's, Ohio, begins at sea on April 1, 1850, and concludes on December 11, 1850. Barrington took the barque Paoli to California. A major portion of the diary consists of short entries describing life in the mines near Nevada [City]. By the end of October, he had sold off his portion of a claim and headed for San Francisco. From there, he sailed home via the Isthmus of Panama. The remainder of the volume features well-written and detailed letters from the mines by a variety of Argonauts." Quarto. Original burgundy paper-covered boards over a burgundy cloth spine, with a printed paper spine label. Internally crisp and clean.
