1897 · Montevideo
by Uruguaya [pseud.]
Montevideo: Imprenta de Dornaleche y Reyes, 1897. First edition. Red pebbled cloth, gilt decoration, title, and author's pseudonym on front board, all edges beveled, later paper label on spine. A very good copy, small tear on rear joint, cloth frayed a bit on spine ends, light soiling to boards, occasional foxing, gilt bright.. 128 pp. 12mo. "Every day when it was late, I saw from a balcony in my garden, which I had in front of the beach ... a young couple arrive, in love to judge by the enthusiasm of their conversation, by their glances , and by the eagerness with which they always intwined their hands" ("Todas los dias, y al caer la tarda, veia llegar, desde un balcon de mi jardin, que tenia frente a la playa de.... una pareja de jovenes, enamorados, a juzjar por el entusiasmo de sus palabras, por sus miradas, y por el afan con que siempre llevaban sus manos enlazadas"); thus begins this tragic romantic idyll, whose author remains unknown. Rare. OCLC shows two possible locations: one at Univ. Notre Dame (OCLC: 819424585) lists Uruguaya as author and has the correct imprint and city; another copy at Notre Dame and at BN Espana show the correct publisher but no city and list Fernán Caballero (pseud. Cecilia Francisca Josefa Böhl de Faber) as the author; but Faber's 'Clemencia' is a different work. BN Uruguay shows a copy, listing María Julieta Ferraz de Gadea (1898- ) as the author, but this is also incorrect, given Ferraz de Gadea's probably date of birth and the fact that this work is not named in the list of the author's works in her novel "Culpable" (1919).
