Mainly known for his long humorous, epistolary poem, The New Bath Guide, Christopher Anstey (1724-1805) also translated Thomas Gray's Elegy into Latin. A Familiar Epistle is a translation of Anstey's own Latin epistle to its would-be illustrator Coplestone Warre Bampfylde, (Latin original, entitled Epistola poetica familiaris, was originally published at Bath in 1776) picking up the themes of his earlier An Election Ball.
