The purchase at auction of an old, badly damaged portrait thought to be Jefferson in 1937 led to this intense and detailed study of the different paintings of Jefferson done by Stuart. The researchers, Orland and Courtney Campbell, have utilized minute and detailed analysis, including X-rays, to determine a chronological order of included portraits.
